In light of everything that is happening in the world, we have been afforded a very unique opportunity we rarely get in our busy lives - the opportunity for alone time. I so often book my schedule so tightly that I am running out of a meeting, onto a conference call, while on my way to dinner with a friend. It is exhausting being in constant human connection, both physically and digitally.


Though this current situation we find ourselves in is obviously the least desirable and, frankly, terrifying, we have to be able to see the small dose of positivity and revelation it is awarding us— alone time.


There are a multitude of studies that tout the benefits of being alone. Here are just a few science-backed reasons for spending time alone:


Alone time helps you know yourself.


Being alone helps you to become more comfortable in your own skin. When youre by yourself, you can choose to do the things that you love and want to do. So often in our lives we make decisions based off of what others want to do. Spending time alone will allow us to make the choices we want without outside influences. This will inherently provide insight into the person you really are and the preferences that best suit you.


Alone time increases productivity.


Although so many offices have open floor plans so everyone can communicate more easily, studies show being surrounded by people kills productivity. People perform better when they have a little privacy.


If you are working from home, this can be a good time to start a project you have been holding out on. Whether it is personal or professional, there are fewer distractions in isolation and you can use this time to advance a goal that has been sitting in the back of your mind for months.


Being alone gives you an opportunity to plan your life.


We spend so much of our life planning for our businesses or planning for a vacation, but we never plan for the most important thing we have, our life. Alone time provides the opportunity to sit and envision the person and life you want to lead. Quiet space allows you to think about your goals, your progress, and changes you want to make in your life.


Creating a good life map will help you design where you want to be a year from now, 5 years from now, 20 years from now. When you create the visualization for your future self, the direction of today’s actions will follow course.


One thing to be mindful of on this unprecedented journey is how we hang onto our digital connections. Though we are so fortunate to have access to our loved ones and the outside world through our phones, we have to be mindful of our screen time.


Social media is designed for addiction and the constant news cycle will only increase your cortisol levels. Stay informed, but don’t leave cable news streaming. Stay connected to your family and friends, but don’t scroll through memes for 7+ hours. Make this alone time about you, use it wisely, and remember to wash your damn hands.
